- Piopiotahi or Milford Sound has been described by some as the 8th wonder of the world, and is home to a vast amount of marine life. It has the highest rainfall rate in New Zealand, and is a popular tourist destination.

- It was called Milford Sound after the discover, John Grono, named it after his home in Wales, Milford Haven.
- The local Maori name, Piopiotahi, is named after a bird called the piopio, and "tahi" which means "one".
- Piopiotahi is a fjord, that was not discovered by other explorers because of the narrow entrance from the ocean.
- Stirling Falls is 495 ft high, and one of the popular places to see, with boat rides taking tourists right up to the falls.
